Late September to mid October
The Lake Turns Gold Before Anywhere Else Gets Busy
Everyone points the car at the North Shore. Alexandria gets the same color three hours closer, with a fraction of the traffic, and you can watch the whole thing happen from a screened porch with a coffee.

When Fall Colors Peak Near Alexandria
Central Minnesota turns earlier than most people expect. The maples, oaks and aspens around Alexandria usually begin in the third week of September, reach full color somewhere between the last days of September and the second week of October, and are mostly down by the third week.
The window moves a little every year with the summer rainfall and the first hard frost. If you are booking tight to the peak, check the Minnesota DNR Fall Color Finder in the week before you travel. The last weekend of September and the first weekend of October are the safest bets, and they happen to be the weekends the lake looks best from the water.

Five Places to See Fall Color Near Alexandria
The Alexandria Chain of Lakes
The best of it, and the reason to stay on the water rather than near it. Out in the middle you see the color twice, once in the branches and once in the reflection, and on a calm October morning the surface holds it like glass. Take a boat or a kayak and go slowly.
Inspiration Peak
One of the highest points in central Minnesota, rising 400 feet above the countryside. From the top you get patchwork forest running to the horizon. On a clear day the view stretches for miles, which is why photographers keep coming back to it in October.
Lake Brophy County Park
Just outside Alexandria and run by Douglas County Parks. Quiet trails, picnic tables, and maples and oaks that put on a proper show. Open space and lakeside views make it the easy one to do with kids in an hour.
Lake Carlos State Park
Hardwood forest rings the shoreline and throws its color back off the water. Miles of trail, from flat lakeside walks to wooded hills, and high wildlife activity in autumn if you like a reason to stand still.

Central Lakes Trail
Fifty five paved miles between Fergus Falls and Osakis, running straight through Alexandria on an old rail line. Wetland, woodland and prairie, flat enough for any level of rider, and in October the whole route becomes a corridor of color.

Fall Things to Do in Town
Orchards and pumpkin patches. Country Blossom Farm is the local one, minutes outside Alexandria, with an apple orchard, cider house, bakery and a themed corn maze. Thea's Pumpkin Patch adds hayrides and an eleven acre maze if you have a spare morning, though it sits about an hour north in Pelican Rapids.
Harvest season, properly. Carlos Creek Winery pours Minnesota-grown wine just outside town. 20 Deep Winery is the smaller, quieter room for an afternoon of tasting when you do not want a crowd.
A rainy day. The clubhouse has an indoor pool, hot tub and sauna, and every villa has a fireplace and a full kitchen. October rain in a lake house is not a problem to solve.

Grape Stomp
18 to 20 September 2026
Carlos Creek Winery runs its Grape Stomp on the second weekend after Labor Day: three days of stomping, live music and Minnesota wine just outside Alexandria. It is the loudest, best weekend of our autumn.
It is also the one that goes first. Villas for Grape Stomp weekend are usually reserved months ahead, so if you are building a trip around it, book that before you book anything else.

A Lake House For The Week The Leaves Turn
Every villa has a full kitchen, a gas fireplace, a lakeside screened porch and a private fire pit. In October that list stops being a feature list and starts being the whole point.
Couples and small groups
One-Bedroom Villa
One night, midweek
Our smallest, quietest, and the easiest way to catch peak week
- The main level of a lakefront villa, a thousand square feet
- King bed with its own attached bathroom
- Full kitchen, living and dining rooms, screened porch
- No stairs anywhere in the stay. Sleeps three
- Often open on dates the larger villas are not
Families and larger groups
Four and Five Bedroom Villas
Sleeps up to fourteen
Everyone under one roof, on the shoreline
- Four bedroom sleeps up to twelve, five bedroom up to fourteen
- Same full kitchen, fireplace and lakeside screened porch
- Two sandy beaches and fire pits along the water
- Private boat launch and dock
Midweek in the shoulder season is the quiet secret of this place. The one-bedroom opens on dates the larger villas are not even available, which means the last week of September is often bookable when a Saturday is not. Rates move with the season and the night of the week, so the booking calendar is the place to check whatever dates you have in mind.
One more thing
See it from the water
The color reads differently from the middle of the lake. An afternoon on a pontoon turns a walk in the leaves into the part of the trip people actually talk about afterwards, and October water is usually flat, quiet and almost entirely yours. Bring coffee and a blanket.
Rent a pontoonWe visited at the end of September, the leaves reflecting off the water looked like fire on the lake.
